An Compassion of Strangers: The Way a Person I Had Just Met Helped Me Obtain the Job That Changed My Life

In the closing decade of the 80s, I was beginning a low-cost journey to Europe with a travel partner. Because my companion was considering starting a postgraduate program in New York, we had arranged a 14-day stopover there on the way to London.

We arrived at the graduate housing, a sizeable ten-floor structure on the Upper West Side named International House. After dropping our bags, we went directly to the cafeteria, where we grabbed food, took a seat, and began chatting with other diners.

Beside me was an individual of Iraqi origin enrolled in an engineering program at a prestigious New York university. He inquired what I did for a living, and I told him that I had recently completed my studies with a degree in science and had been working on studies involving microscopic analysis.

He mentioned that there was an microscopy facility at the university – adjacent to the school of engineering, which was the reason he was familiar with it. He suggested that I ought to seek a position with them. I chuckled at the suggestion, telling him that I was soon departing to Europe and, additionally, I lacked a US visa.

A day later I ventured out, returning to the canteen that evening. The engineering student approached me and informed me that he had organized a discussion for me with the director of the microscopy lab at Columbia. Because he had made the arrangement, I showed up for the discussion – but right away told my prospective employer that I lacked the necessary visa, so I was likely not a suitable candidate.

In typical New York fashion – a city where opportunities abound – she said: “We'll handle it. When can you start?” I didn't board the aircraft to London.

I worked there for a trio of years. An advantage of the role was that I got complimentary education at Columbia, and I seized the chance to finish a graduate degree in global studies.

I never saw that student again and I can't recall his identity, but his incredible act of kindness altered my destiny in so many ways. I lacked the courage or self-belief to contact anyone at an prestigious college and request employment. And, I had always wanted to study abroad, but could never have afforded it without that free tuition.

What's more, that job in New York paved the way for a position in Switzerland where I encountered my handsome spouse from France, with whom I currently share four amazing children. This was a pivotal life event. That kind stranger changed my trajectory in life, and I’m always appreciative.
