The Film 'Together' Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Romantic Bond.

We present a dare for long-term couples who enjoy the horror genre: Sit down with your partner and view Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its streaming debut on Hulu. At first glance, it might appear like conventional biological terror, but beneath Together exists a intense meditation about our choices in loving each other.

A Directorial Debut Delving into Relationship Dynamics

Together is the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, an unmarried couple that have remained a couple for ten years. United in marriage in reality in 2017, Franco and Brie infuse a special spark to their portrayals, skillfully embodying both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.

The story commences when Millie and Tim relocate from the urban environment to the country for her career. A somewhat stereotypical plot device, sure, but that’s largely where the conventions cease. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While hiking near their new home, a storm hits, and the two tumble into an underground cave. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a strange force starts to affect the pair. This force compels a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond emotional intimacy.

The whole movie is a methodically building of scares, blending moments of hallucinatory nightmares, disturbing (but never too gross) biological grotesqueries, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes amidst something grotesque). Shanks weaves these elements together neatly and delivers them in a consistently growing aura of dread.

Complex Characterizations

A significant portion of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they skillfully illustrate manifold depths to the partnership at the film's core. Millie's sense of self and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions slowly bubbles to the surface.

In contrast, Tim's character senses confinement and isolated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve left the city and distant from his support system. He is terrified of the notion of completely losing his sense of self in his partner. This fear is amplified by the circumstance he can’t drive and needs Millie for getting around.

The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie never makes Tim or Millie the obvious villain.

Tim and Millie confront the kind of problems that arise in any relationship after ten years. Fundamentally, they still love each other. They find humor with each other, provide solace, and are vulnerable at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their relationship.

Allegory and Meaning

While the otherworldly presence in Together act as a metaphor for these fears of codependency and giving oneself over to another person, the metaphor does not come across as hamfisted or heavy-handed. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights enhance each other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Debated Finale

Together’s ending, which remains unspoiled, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about codependent relationships. Reports indicate that those not in relationships have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. On the other hand, some couples experiencing tension found that the film ended up guiding them to resolve their issues.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could potentially serve as a telling indicator of how you perceive partnership. Will the ending sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a positive outlook on love? Will you see yourself in one of the characters and yell at the screen, or simply turn to your partner and utter, “We could get through that together”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an test you can embark on at this very moment.

Together is available to watch on the streaming service Hulu now.
